Seemingly contradicting his national security adviser, US President Donald Trump on Sunday played down North Korea’s recent missile tests as he teed off a state visit to Japan and said they were not a concern for him.

In a tweet, Trump said “Pyongyang had fired off numerous short-range projectiles off it’s eastern coast Saturday which disturbed some of my people, and others, but not me.” He added: “I have confidence that Chairman Kim will keep his promise to me.”

President Trump’s tweet appeared to contradict his national security Adviser John Bolton on foreign soil who on Saturday had warned reporters here that there is “no doubt” the launches had contravened UN Security Council resolution.

The US president still maintains that North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un has pledged he is serious about denuclearisation, although experts say there is still a wide gulf between the two sides over what that means.
